Origin
Gemtree was founded when the Buttery family planted its beloved Shiraz in McLaren Vale four decades ago. The Obsidian Shiraz is a family treasure and indulgence. Obsidian is hand crafted – grapes are nurtured in the vineyard before the cream of the crop is hand selected and vinified separately. Still, only the best barrels make the cut, ensuring only 1% of our total Shiraz production makes the Obsidian grade.
Obsidian – an extremely powerful and creative gemstone.
McLaren Vale is one of Australia's premier wine regions. It has a Mediterranean climate making it ideal for growing grapes. The pristine coastline of SA is just minutes from our vineyards and the maritime influences of cool evening breezes and ancient limestone deposits in the soil are instrumental to the quality of fruit that we grow. Gemtree's vineyards are farmed 100% biodynamically and certified organic.
Winemaking
After the great 2012 vintage the pressure was on to make something comparable! I am proud to say we have delivered what our brand has been aspiring to achieve - to deliver a wine that is hand crafted, shows the typicity of our great vineyards, manipulated in a way that purity of Shiraz prevails and we all get to enjoy a truly remarkable wine. Our oak regime with this vintage was decreased, as we wanted to see Gemtree’s provenance and the result is a wine a showing purity and elegance.
Vintage Notes
The 2012-2013 growing season brought wonderful winter rains with McLaren Vale Reaching its total average rainfall (540mm) by the end of July. Spring however was dry, which resulted in early watering requirements to keep the vines functioning at an optimum. The dry spring saw lower than average crop levels for the 2013 vintage. All these aspects lead to the onset of early ripening with phenological ripeness and sugar accumulation occurring in early February. Consequently picking commenced on the 8th February with wonderful flavour maturity and natural acidity.
