Winery/Brand: Gemtree

Pale-Straw in colour with aromas of white peach and spring blossom The freshness and zestiness of this wine is very evident even from the aroma. Flavours of lime juice, Turkish delight and rose water are all evident on the palate. The wine is restrained and light in structure.

The early picked wines of 2014 show wonderful varietal expression, Moonstone is no exception. Drinking perfectly now, not for the cellar. Recommended food pairings: Atlantic Salmon ?llets with garlic and ginger butter.

The Story

SURPRISE! Your Albarino is Savagnin

Some say, “out of adversity comes opportunity”… this sums up our Moonstone Savagnin perfectly. One hundred per cent biodynamic, we originally planted this variety, ‘Savagnin’, under the assumption that it was the famous Spanish dry white ‘Albarino’. You can understand our heartache and disappointment when it was discovered that apparently the powers that be that control these things got it wrong big time, and the variety was actually a little known variety from France known as ‘Savagnin’.

This same ‘mix up’ happened to a number of wineries dotted throughout the Vale but  we have rolled with it and concentrated on producing a simple, easy-drinking aromatic white wine, uncomplicated, fermented naturally and put into bottle. Definitely a perfect summer aperitif and a nice alternative to that other ‘Savvy’.

Biodynamic with the emphasis on ‘dynamic’. This is an intelligent alternative to that other ‘Savvy’.

Growing conditions: The 2013 to 2014 growing season presented us with some challenges. Adequate winter rains, a dry spring, then some unseasonal warmth and wind. The summer was warm and dry with early February looking like the harvest was going to take off. On the 14th February we were blessed with 60mm of rain. This had the positive effect of delaying sugar ripeness allowing ?avours to develop naturally. This is what I classify as the “deck chair” vintage. The resulting wines from vintage 2014 are integrated, balanced and show purity of fruit.
