GrapesPinot Noir
Bright cherry fruit on the nose, in the mouth it has a sublime silky texture. Flavours abound, fruit, spice, savoury earthy beetroot hints as it evolves. It is fresh and persistent with a lovely complexity.
Everything is done right here, with much thought and observation, in the old style way, from the biodynamic preparations and close vine plantings through to the gravity fed winery, and the results are exceptional. This Pinot Noir is the pinnacle of those efforts, fruit from the oldest vines and treated to the best oak. One to savour.
Hochkirch Pinots are made in a bold earthy rich burgundian style, quite different to the light soft red fruit styles ofter found in New Zealand & Tasmania.
Tasting Notes for Hochkirch Maximus Pinot Noir from the Winery
"The most capricious of varieties, Pinot is however capable of breathtaking magnificence as no other red wine when terroir, season and man meet in the right coincidence. Although these are early days Pinot seems to feel at home in our vineyard with the rigours of a cold southwest Victorian climate.
As always, this is also 100% estate fruit, sourced from 10- to 30-year-old vines on basalt, gravel and loam soils. The fruit was picked between the 8th and the 15th of March. 25% was fermented as whole bunches while the rest of the fruit was destemmed but not crushed. Fermentation was in small, open-top vessels, and it was plunged once a day, then pressed to tank after 14 days to French barriques (just 15% new) for 14 months. Minimal SO2 added (50ppm).

2021 Hochkirch “Maximus” Pinot Noir [Tarrington]
This is an exceptional pinot noir. Beguiling, delicate red fruit aromas, a touch of autumnal leaf-litter, some distant woodsmoke, then a sweep of tangy, sweet red-earthiness on the tongue, finishing with long, savoury, silky-fine tannins. Complex, satisfying and destined to mature beautifully in the cellar for many years.

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“It’s kind of understated but also offers layers and layers of complexity. Symphonic. Scents are sweet fruited, spicy, herbal, faintly meaty and nutty, flavours similarly so with fine tannins in a sheath lending gentle pucker and tension. It sits in the palate with ultimate palate-refreshing succulence, persistence and detail. Magnificent wine that topples the standard bearers, this is the real deal, honest, pure, fleshy and rich with the grape variety’s best attributes on show.”
