Michelle says "I love Hochkirch Biodynamic Shiraz, earthy, fragrant and intriguing, keeps changing in the glass"
Dark red. Smells of spice, pepper, dark red fruit with touch of cedar. Very elegant fresh mid-weight palate with dark fruit, lovely tight acid and firm ripe tannin. Unreal. The texture is sublime, soft, supple, medium weight with this feathery web of tannin pulling things close. Wildly drinkable and oh so serious at the same time. Magnificent. Syrah lovers pay attention.
Perfect partner to slow cooked lamb on a rainy night.
Tasting Notes for Hochkirch Syrah from the Winery
The cool conditions of 2022 were ideal for creating the Hochkirch Syrah style. The fruit was hand-harvested from 10- to 30-year-old vines on basalt, gravel and loam soils. 75% of the fruit was destemmed to small, open fermenters with the remaining 25% processed as whole bunches. After 21 days (and some human pigeage), the fruit was sent to small, old French oak where it went through malo. It was then racked to barrel for approximately 14 months. No additions.
Previous Vintage Notes
"A most versatile variety, Shiraz can produce greatness across a perplexing breadth of terroir. In our cold climate we sit on the edge of its climatic range and each year we are astonished at its expression of our place. Falling bright with gravity our wines are neither fined nor filtered and in some years show an opaque richness as testament to this natural process. Bottled by hand using natural corks, our wine of course contains no animal products or GMOs." John Nagorcka - Hochkirch Winery, Tarrington VIC

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“Organic/biodynamic farmed from Henty in Victoria. One of the long term au naturale producers too. Brilliant wines. Wow, game meat. Like beef jerky meets venison meets peppery salumi. Unreal. The texture is sublime, soft, supple, medium weight with this feathery web of tannin pulling things close. So much spice. So many herbs. Somewhere in that all a red fruited freshness and succulence. Boysenberry and mulberry faintly. Complex, layered, detailed, wildly drinkable and oh so serious at the same time. Magnificent. Syrah lovers pay attention."
