Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine sourced from a low yielding block consisting of shallow sandy loam over superb deep red clay providing ideal conditions for Shiraz vines. The wine is made in open-top fermenters and basket pressed and matured in hogsheads for up to two years before being bottled without fining or filtration. It is a powerful wine with intense flavours of dark fruits and toasty oak supported by fine ripe tannins. A wine with a strong backbone and a long finish that will cellar for a long time.
Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2019 Tasting Notes from the winery
Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding Shiraz vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800s. Today, sixth and seventh generation family members meticulously tend the vines. Traditional winemaking and maturation in American and French oak hogsheads has ensured a complex, full-bodied Shiraz which will reward long term cellaring. Greenock Shiraz is a true family estate wine - grown, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske estate.
GROWING SEASON
Quality from 2019 is stunning. It was a warm and extremely dry growing season with rainfall down significantly (39%), making it one of the driest years in the past century. Summer was 3 degrees warmer than average. Yields were impacted by the dry season, leading to smaller berries and bunches. Importantly quality is brilliant producing richly flavoured, intense wines. VINEYARD Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is sourced from a single vineyard, located on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek in the Northern Barossa Valley. The vineyard consists of shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay and limestone, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz vines.
WINEMAKING
The single vineyard “Greenock” block of grapes was harvested on February 28th. After picking, the grapes were destemmed into open top fermenters. They were fermented warm with hand pump-overs twice a day for 12 days on skins prior to pressing. After pressing off skins the wine was filled to a mix of 35% new and the balance used American and French oak hogsheads. The wine completed primary fermentation and underwent natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was matured in barrel for fifteen months prior to bottling.
TASTING NOTES
Greenock Shiraz 2019 is thick purple-black in colour. The aroma promptly evokes an extensive wine awaits with a complex of black plum, cocoa, floral perfume, toasty oak, clove spice and dark fruit cake. The palate is full-bodied to the utmost. Immense with flavour and concentration. It is rich and powerful with ripe black fruits dominating throughout. Evident oak adds a further layer, tucked in behind the solid fruit. Tannins are obvious, their dryness counter-balancing the opulent fruit richness, but being natural they’re perfectly integrated adding a muscular structure. This is a fully harmonious, smart and pure wine that’s completed with an almost boundless finish. Greenock is a complex, refined and classy Barossa Shiraz that has a long cellaring future.

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2019 Review
"Perforce is a word not oft used. A shame, as it is an elegant word that just by saying it, you understand its intent in expressing a necessity or even the inevitable. It might even mean a glass of Kalleske. Year in year out, the team team works tirelessly for us to enjoy the outcomes of their work in the vineyard and the winery. Tasting their eighteenth release of the Greenock Shiraz is an experience that leaves you thinking you, perforce, I need some more. The 2019 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is from a single vineyard site in Greenock, a sub-district of the Barossa valley in South Australia. It is a deep and bright purple red which, perforce, is instantly appealing. The nose is youthfully tight and complex with an abundance of plums, dark berries, coffee beans, spices and a hint of nuts that, perforce, awakens the senses. The palate is vibrant with sweet black fruits and spices. The plums are glorious. The coffee is expressive and the dark chocolate mouth coating. Charcuterie is there too, interwoven with firm velvety tannins sustaining the flavours for an extended time. It is robust and elegant in one, perforce, you will desire a second glass
