GrapesGrenache
This single vineyard, old vine, Barossa Grenache is bright, ruby red coloured, with notes of crushed raspberry, strawberry and thyme, and coffee grounds on the nose. The palate also adds musk, milk chocolate, quartz minerality, and soft tannins with generous, mouth-filling body. A great match to cured jamon and Manchego cheese or sweet Cantonese roast pork. Tasted on a Leaf Day (8 May 2022).
Tasting Notes for Kalleske Parallax Grenache 2021 from the winery
2021 Parallax is light purple-red in colour.
The compelling aroma is bright and perfumed. There is strawberry, herb, sweet earth, raspberry, fresh flowers and musk. It’s evolving and inviting.
On the palate it is light-bodied and bursting with fresh fruit. It is pure and vibrant with precise generosity. Red berry fruits dominate and are matched with super fine natural chalky tannins giving a seamless backbone. A touch of minerality adds further interest and dynamism. A surprisingly long finish completes a very delicious, charming and engaging wine. Parallax is best enjoyed now or over the next five years.

Parallax: Parallax is when an object appears to change its position because the person or instrument perceiving it has changed their position.
Parallax Grenache… the object is the same, Grenache… but the winery perceiving it has changed their position… hence the emergence of a neoteric expression of this classic old vine Barossa varietal…
Grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It is typically harvested late in the season when it is fully ripe to display gorgeous rich sweet red fruit characters and soft supple tannins with a generous and supple mouthfeel. But when harvested early in the season a divergent and equally impressive wine can result. Parallax Grenache is picked 2-3 weeks earlier than normal and combined with fermentation on stalks and minimal maturation has resulted in an admirably divergent wine compared to the norm from this variety, showing the versatility of Grenache.
Growing Season
Vintage 2021 was an exemplary year with fine wines and good yields. Growing season rainfall was marginally below average and temperatures were mild ensuring vine canopies remained healthy. Vintage weather was absolutely perfect throughout, with dry mild-warm days and cool nights ensuring even and steady ripening across all varieties. There is strong colour and flavour across all the reds along with excellent structure and balance whilst the whites are bright, fresh and elegant.
Vineyard
Parallax is a single-vineyard wine from a low yielding Grenache vineyard. The soil is sandy loam with quartz, ironstone and subsoil clay, providing optimal conditions for these vines.
Winemaking
The Grenache was harvested on March 8th. The grapes were crushed and all stalks were included in the fermenters to add tannin, structure and complexity. The native wild yeast from the vineyard were left to naturally ferment with temperature peaking at 30 degrees C. Heading down boards were used in the fermenters, completely submersing the skins and stalks in the fermenting juice to ensure gentle extraction. After 10 days on skins, the must was pressed to tank for natural malolactic fermentation and brief maturation prior to bottling.

This took out top spot for both Moret and Imrie. “I loved the drinkability of this wine,” Imrie wrote. “The tannins were nice and powdery, the alcohol didn’t jump out, and the flavours lingered happily. This would be easy to drink a glass on its own, but I could also imagine it pairing well with a smoky tandoori lamb. Super fragrant, there was air-dried strawberry, red cherry, cranberry and orange fruits. Slightly creamy. The sense of sweetness from the fruit is balanced with a beautiful savoury oregano, dried herbal aroma. This was all mirrored in the flavours, which made for a seamless transition between the nose and the palate.” “Youthful and attractive nose of violets, lavender, raspberries, redskin lollies, warm rocks and garrigue/sage/pine needle on the nose, very lifted and bright,” noted Moret. “Silky texture with finely tuned, long tannins, red fruited and long on the palate, nose of salted and cured meats, mineral depth and length. Vibrant and vivacious expression, with an excellent balance of complexity and playfulness.”

“Biodynamic farmed grenache under the ‘wilder style’ range that also has Zeitgeist and Plenarius alongside. Some time ago I enjoyed the movie The Parallax View. Meanwhile… This is a tight and nervy grenache sitting somewhere between pleasure and something else. It’s bony and tannic, twiggy and savoury, the firmness is real here. It finishes with some customary cherry flavours, and the perfume delivers maraschino cherry and sweet earthiness. The longer I spent with the wine, the more I liked it’s nature. Italian-esque, might sound vague but picks up the thread of savouriness, herbal detail and tight, tense tannin that are all at play here.”
