Winery/Brand: Spring Seed Wine Co

The 'Forget-me-not' Sauvignon Blanc Semillon shows fine cut grass and fig aromas. The wine has a balanced middle weight palate with a lemon/lime fresh acid driven length. The Spring Seed Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is perfect when chilled as an aperitif or will team admirably with a range of tucker such as Asian food, cheeses, white meat, poultry and even dessert.

The Story

"Our wines are based on organic viticulture combined with traditional vinification and natural minimal processing. All this is intended to ensure the purity, integrity, texture and flavour of the vineyard."

The Spring Seed Wine labels are unashamedly inspired by vintage flower seed packets created at the turn of the last century. The colour, clarity and beauty of the original seed packets are quite remarkable. We chose three different flower images to adorn each one of our McLaren Vale wines, simply because they are quite lovely. The Forget-me-not Semillon Sauvignon Blanc has the Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis) Forget-me-not (Myosotis spp) and Sunflower (Helianthus annuus).

Vintage 2010: We recorded just about average annual rainfall over the year, which resulted in healthy crops across most of the varieties. The weather then remained almost perfect for the rest of vintage. The general consensus amongst winemakers in the Vale is that 2010 marks an exceptional year for both red and white wines.

Winemaking: We made the 'Forget-me-not' SSB in a similar fashion to the Spring Seed 'Four O'clock' Chardonnay in that we wanted to be as gentle with the fruit as we could so as to retain the delicate aromatics of the varieties. The Semillon was oxidatively handled, while the Sauvignon Blanc was reductively handled. Both batches underwent cool, temperature controlled ferments as part of our strategy, and saw no oak at any stage. We picked the Semillon slightly riper than the Sauvignon Blanc at approximately 13°Beaume to add palate weight to the blend. while the Sauvignon Blanc was picked leaner at approximately 11-11.5°Beaume to maintain natural acidity and capture the grassy spectrum of Sauvignon Blanc flavours.

The wine is frrrrreessshh. All primary fruits in the bouquet with limes and mandarins doing a little dance. The palate has a grassy affectation, some grapefruit acidity, a pinch of spice then mandarin juice and tropical fruits come back to the fore. It’s not complex or layered with detail, but it is the kind of smashingly refreshing drink that a bargain seeking nation wants in its cups come BBQ day or pool party. A touch too much phenolic bite and a ripe fruit glycerol-like plushness do drop points, but in the end, a fully organic, pure of fruit and very clean white wine… at all of $15? Win. 'Pale yellow. High-pitched, spicy citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by honeysuckle and smoky minerals. Firm and racy on the palate, offering zesty lemon and quince flavors and a deeper note of honey. Finishes with solid grip and good nervy cut. I like this wine's clarity and focus. No oak used here.
