Tasting Notes for Stefano Lubiana Brut Reserve from the Winery
Our fruit for this wine comes from our two estate vineyards in Southern Tasmania. The first, is from our home vineyard in Granton – this vineyard has a northely aspect and consistently ripens grapes. The site overlooks the eastern bank of the spectacular Derwent River and benefits from its capacity to cool northerly summer winds. The vineyard is planted at 100 metres elevation on a mix of two terroirs, grey gravelly loam over clay and red loam over gravel. The second, is from our vineyard in the Huon Valley which consists of black loam over white clay. This vineyard is planted ranging from 25 to 50 metres elevation and is consistently cooler than the Granton vineyard, perfect for sparkling wine grapes. Steve moved from his family vineyard in South Australia to Tasmania in pursuit of making Champagne method sparkling wine and released his first NV Brut Reserve in 1994.
This new release is from the 2021 vintage with reserve wine dating back to 2004 being blended in to create the Stefano Lubiana Brut Reserve house style. This disgorgement is a blend of Pinot Noir (90%) and Chardonnay (10%). After blending, the liqueur de tirage is added so secondary fermentation can commence in bottle. The wine then spends 20-24 months aging on lees to promote complexity and texture of the wine before being riddled, disgorged and finally labelled. The wine is made in a brut style and the dosage is 6 grams per litre. Before release the wine always spends time on cork, something that Steve knows is vital in order for the wine to come together after disgorgement. – Steve & Monique Lubiana

Drink to me with thine eyes only with your fine, creamy mousse and thick beading, such a pretty sight before the smokiness with a whiff of apple, crushed almonds and a hint of sea air hit your nostrils. On the palate, there is a wealth of juicy apricots, nectarines, apples, candied lemon zest, a hint of something saline and then a warm finish, much like the nutty topping of a good crumble. The finish shows off a delicately honeyed brioche autolytic characteristic and a desire for a truffled chicken and mayonnaise brioche roll. A very welcome addition to the Lubiana family.
Max Allen, Australian Financial Review
"Steve Lubiana has almost 30 years of sparkling wine experience behind him and his current range of bubblies is the best I’ve tasted. This stunningly bright, pure, crystalline non-vintage fizz, with subtle hints of leatherwood honey, is a blend of 70 per cent chardonnay and 30 percent pinot noir, and spent two years on lees."
