“On the nose our 2023 Estate Chardonnay is intense and powerful showing notes of meyer lemon, nectarine and orange blossom. Hints of honey nougat and crème brûlée enliven the first impression, exhibiting the wine’s opulence. The palate is concentrated with a core of lemon, lemon balm and peach, while there is a creaminess promoting a fully rounded texture. The wine is powerful, and lean with minerality and freshness. This wine is one to enjoy now or can be cellared for 5 to 8+ years. ” – Monique & Stefano Lubiana
A delightful and charming top-notch Chardonnay, one glass won't be enough. A wonderful wine to enjoy now, or watch it grow and develop over the years.
Tasting Notes for Stefano Lubiana Estate Chardonnay 2023 from the Winery
The most layered and complex of the three Chardonnays from Stefano Lubiana, the ‘Estate’ is a classic example of a robust but beautifully balanced cool climate wine. This wine has all the elements of a great Chardonnay present – fruit, oak, acid, creamy texture and complexity, but no element overpowers the other. A wonderful wine to enjoy now, or watch it grow and develop over the years.
The aspect and geography of the Estate Chardonnay blocks vary in range from 25 – 30 metres and 60 – 80 metres in elevation. The vines vary in age between 15 and 30 years old. The soil types of our Estate ranges from grey silty gravel over porous gravelly clay to gravelly and patches of chalky limestone. Low yields of less than 5 tonnes per hectare.
Hand picked grapes are processed immediately. All fruit is pressed first then barrelled by gravity to the underground cellar. The juice, on full solids, fills an assortment of 225L French oak barriques with a balanced level of new oak (20%). The juice’s indigenous yeast now takes the stage and erupts into spontaneous fermentation, bubbling away in our naturally cool and calm underground cellar. Once the wine is dry secondary fermentation begins with inoculation. Barrels are topped regularly and battonaged (stirring of barrel lees) infrequently. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling.

This is a creamy and nougat-laced expression of Chardonnay. Aniseed, nectarine, butter and sage, with a little pink grapefruit. It’s rich and slippery, quite some buttered peach, but the acidity is good, and adds a bit of life to the wine, and then more of the cling peach and cream, with some lemon rind to close. Good wine, pretty glossy and worked, but does have impact. It feels maybe a little warmer than its stated alcohol, but that’s a sensory thing rather than a fact.

Mike Bennie: "There are a bunch of different strata of chardonnay at SL these days but I think this is what could be called ‘Estate’. Biodynamic farmed. Fresh as you like. What a lovely, delicious, moreish thing this is. This is the chardonnay you jam into people’s faces and say ‘hey, this is what quality wine is’. It oozes charm, sleek and slick in texture, fresh fruit seasoned appropriately with spice, lemon curd, fresh stone fruit, minerally licks like pumice and talc, zingy acidity, all even, all matched, seamless and flowing and so darn good. Just beautiful."

A wine with strong Tasmanian credentials including an inner energy, steely reserve and powerful acidity. That's the groundwork for a long-lived chardonnay, right there. Immediately reserved and still youthful with grapefruit pith, lemon curd, cut pear, fleshy mango. Good, strong backbone in play with a linear line of citrus infusion. A waiting game kind of wine, be patient.
