GrapesPinot Noir
The 2023 Primavera Pinot Noir has a vibrant crimson-purple hue. When swirled the wine impresses a slight halo. The nose is alive with lifted aromas, a combination of ripe raspberries, strawberries, brambly mulberries and toasted cedar. There palate is generous with raspberry and strawberry bonbon like flavours but these elements are checked by the juicy acid and firm tannin, of which both are in good supply offering excellent structure. As a result together with its concentrated fruit characters this wine has great length. Enjoy now but know the concentrated palate will relax with time, this wine will reward you with cellaring and can be put down for 5+ years. – Steve & Monique Lubiana
Tasting Notes for Stefano Lubiana Primavera Pinot Noir from the Winery
Our Primavera Pinot Noir is mostly wild fermented, de-stemmed, and taken off skins early to retain a lot of fruit flavour. The grapes are hand-picked, hand-sorted and fermented with their own yeasts and some whole bunches. The basket pressed after about 3 weeks. The result is a beautiful, soft red wine with a natural medium body that has wonderful drinkability. – Steve & Monique Lubiana
Vintage 2023
The Spring was cool however at the start of summer we were met with ferocious winds which resulted in poor flowering, resulting in lower yields in the vineyard. The following months were cooler and the vintage was delayed until late March 2023. Although yields were down, diligent and tireless work in the vineyard translated that this year's grapes were excellent quality with a high concentration of flavour.
Two of our vineyards contribute the fruit to our 2023 Primavera Pinot Noir. The majority of the fruit is yielded from our biodynamic vineyard in Granton located in the Derwent Valley. The other small portion of fruit is sourced from our Cradoc vineyard, in the heart of the Huon Valley. The Granton soil is varied with a gravel base covered in red loam with patches of riverbed silt, and chalky soil, and in comparison, the Cradoc soil is composite cobblestone over white clay. The mix of these terroirs gives this wine a beautiful balance flavour and silky tannin. Our Granton fruit offers layers of savoury notes while adding more structure to the palate. Whereas the fruit from our Cradoc vineyard provides pretty characters from the slower ripening, providing a generous palate of raspberry, cherry and strawberry bonbon. Hand picked grapes are processed immediately. The fruit undergoes wild fermentaton in open and closed top fermenters with a mixture of whole bunch and destemmed fruit. Then the wine on skins is drained then basket pressed before being barrelled down by gravity to the underground cellar filling our 225L French oak barriques. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling. Steve’s knowledge and experience with Pinot Noir over three decades are now being imparted onto our next generation winemaker, Marco Lubiana. Marco has been working full time alongside Steve at Stefano Lubiana Wines for 6 years now running the winery.
