Pale straw in colour, the nose entices with citrus, pear and some tropical notes, pineapple perhaps. The palate is fresh with bright acid and a slightly viscous texture (from the malo fermentation) revealing stonefruit flavours with a hint of cashew nut and vanilla. It finishes dry with a gentle grip that cleanses your palate. Great drinking.
Tasting Notes for Temple Bruer Preservative Free Chardonnay 2022 from the Winery
Medium-bodied, crisp, and tropical. Passionfruit, pineapple, and lemon.
Palate: White peach and citrus peel with notes of vanilla and jasmine blossom. Dry and medium-bodied with a slight grippy and textured finish.
Nose: Green apple, lemon curd, and tropical flavours of passionfruit, papaya, pineapple, and mango.
Food Pairing: Pumpkin with herb and citrus salad or Barbecued Coorong mullet

Vintage Notes
A strong 2022 vintage from high-quality fruit and low to moderate yields with excellent natural acidity from an overall cool vintage with extended ripening periods for most varieties. Perhaps one of the longest vintages we have experienced, harvest continued for 11 weeks. We commenced picking chardonnay on February 3rd in the Riverland, and concluded on April 25th at Langhorne Creek with shiraz.
Vineyard
The Chardonnay was sourced from Barmara in the Riverland where the vines are 30 years old. The vineyard is certified Organic and Biodynamic and has mallee soils which consist of deep sand over lime and clay. The 2021 vintage and growing season was very cool and dry, which led to slower ripening over the season. Natural acidity, concentrated fruit flavour and fine tannins were seen over all of Temple Bruer vineyards and regions. Picking began in late January and finished in late April. Yields and quality were great due to a wet winter across our vineyards followed with a cooler but also dry summer which led to low disease pressure and even and long ripening periods.
Thanks to the acquisition of two new vineyards, this is our first estate-grown chardonnay! The chardonnay is grown at two sites in the Riverland, one in Cobdogla and the other in Loxton. The chardonnay vines are approximately 20 years old and grown over mallee soils which consist of deep sand over lime and clay.
Winemaking
The chardonnay was picked very early morning, using a selective MOG (material other than grapes) sorter which ensures only the best grapes make it into the winery. It was picked in two parcels from two of Temple Bruer's Riverland vineyards on the 3rd and the 7th of February 2022 from Cobdogla and Loxton consecutively. They arrived at 12 Baumé and a pH of 3.26. While the grapes were cool, they were quickly crushed, lightly pressed and cold settled overnight before racking the next day and fermentation commenced. This chardonnay fermented for 2 weeks at a cool temperature of 14C. It finished malolactic fermentation and it was cold and heat stabilised and bottled in mid-May. No sulphur dioxide was used during the making of this wine.
