Tasting Notes for Yangarra Ovitelli Grenache 2020 from the Winery
Ovitelli is the most perfumed and elegant Grenache from the sands at Yangarra. The vibrant fruit of those dry grown 1946 bush vines is rewarded with a long, luxurious ferment and a whole autumn on skins in big ceramic eggs.
Vintage Summary
The growing season was affected by a very hot spring, leading to the lowest yields on record. As the grapes started their ripening process in 2020, the weather miraculously cooled to a very mild ripening season. This resulted in wonderful concentration of flavour, retention of natural acidity and brightness of fruit, but above all, beautiful finesse and balanced tannins.
Winemaking
Sourced from Block 30 (2.0 Ha, planted in 1946 and adjacent to the High Sands block). Hand-picked (21st March) and selectively berry sorted. 100% destemmed, crushed and tipped into 675L ceramic eggs. The fermentation occurred in the eggs and remained on skins for 170 days. No pressings are used in this wine. No oak, matured exclusively in the eggs for a total 11 months. Bottled March 2021.

97 Points: Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion (2020 Vintage)
Always an exciting proposition. A transparent grenache of pixelated precision. As reminiscent of its nebbiolo brethren as it is of pinot. A shimmering red-fruited veil. Gritty, attenuated tannins derived from old vines (1946) and a long, gentle agitation in ceramic eggs. Here, a spontaneous ferment occurs across an astounding 170 days. Like biting into the juiciest raspberry that bridles the perfect edge of ripeness, before sucking on sandstone. Long is an understatement. This is among Australia's greatest wines from the country's finest cultivar.
